 Welcome to my website!

   Since 1995 I’ve had a quote above my desk from an
   episode of Ted Koppel’s Nightline about poor boys and their
   dream to escape poverty by becoming NBA stars. Talking
   about the cruel illusion that
 basketball, like the lottery,
   provides a practical escape from poverty, Koppel said,
   "Education is the one dream that makes all the others
   possible, the only miracle that affords genuine equal opportunity."
I believe that was the dream my mother had when she brought me to this country from Germany. I was not quite eight years old and I spoke not a word of English. Public schools and public universities have fulfilled her and my dream of opportunity.

I want to ensure that dream is within reach of all children in Colorado. That's why I'm seeking re-election to the CD 2 seat on the State Board.

Here on the website, you can learn more about me and my priorities for making sure that every school in Colorado remains a great place to learn and prepare for a successful life. There are also quick and convenient links if you'd like to contact me with ideas, questions or concerns.

Thank you for your ongoing support of excellent public education across Colorado. I hope to once again earn your vote this November so that I can continue to represent you on the State Board!

January 2012

State Board Member Angelika Schroeder chosen to serve on National Task Force On the Role of Technology in Schools and Communities

For the third consecutive year, Colorado State Board member Angelika Schroeder has been selected as a participant on a National Association of State Boards of Education study group.

NASBE conducts annual study groups to provide professional development to members of State Boards of Education, set organizational direction and priorities, and inform the state education policymaking process on key issues.

As a member of the 2012 national task force, Schroeder will meet with other state board members, researchers, and policy analysts to examine the complex issues related to crafting and implementing effective policies that fully address the impact of technology on teaching and learning under multi-state standards and identify the relationship between technology and the social and emotional health of students:

  • Preparing students for computer-based assessments;
  • Increasing teachers’ skill at using technology in the classroom;
  • Developing students’ media literacy and sense of responsible digital citizenship; and
  • Developing criteria to help administrators and policymakers effectively assess technology in line with the needs in their respective states

The study group will issue a comprehensive report in October 2012 at the NASBE Annual Conference in Chicago. The group’s policy recommendations will be disseminated to variety of groups including members of Congress, federal officials, governors, chief state school officers, and local education policymakers.
